“Don’t mind me, I’m having one of those ‘just killed a person’ moments, you know how they are.”
I know two people who have taken human lives. One was Jenn, who had four or so kills to her name (it happens when you do high-risk bodyguard work). All of them were in defense of her own life or the life of whoever she was protecting, and all of them were described to me as ‘shockingly easy to do at the time, but they ripped a fucking chunk out of my soul later’. Later generally ended up being whenever the adrenaline surge wound down. So, yeah…… this looks about right. Jenn usually had to get up the next day, put on her armour and weapons, and go right back to work. Hopefully Nazz gets a little time and maybe some therapy.
Jenn stories can be fact or fictional and I would believe them either way. As far as I can tell she’s joined the ranks of Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill in tall tales of manly ultra-violence (she was undoubtedly butcher than I will ever be)!
I wouldn’t wish therapy on Nazz, either because therapy is useless or because you would end up with a therapist covered in stab wounds.
Well, Jenn was a firm believer in the truth so I try not to make things up. Last thing I need is a pissed off ghost capable of shoving me through a wall! Or doing to me what Nazz did to Harkin….
Funnily enough, the person I feel worst for here is Detective Farley. His wife’s in the loony bin and his son just got murdered; while he never exactly had the best of relationships with either if them, he’s not actually a bad guy and he’s all alone now.
What will Farley think of all of this? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
It is very flattering, however, to have readers consider the characters’ feelings, even the ones who aren’t present. Building a fictional world takes time but it’s little things like that that make it come alive.
I wonder if this is the first time Nazz has taken a life? She definitely seemed like a vulnerable person who put up a big front to protect herself… and then she got indoctrinated into a crazy gang army and given military training. Not the best education for an emotionally unstable person.
We’ll learn more about Nazz’ backstory later, but for here and now it’s can be stated that this is her first murder (it doesn’t change the story either way, and Harkin is still dead as a brick).
