GANGWAY pt.8
First off, a big apo-polly-logie for last week’s installment. I do try to keep this comic PG-13, not only for my own reputation, but for the reputation of you other fine webcomic creators who leave comments and link to me. I don’t want any sort of smutty, smeary rep to spread around my loyal readers and supporters, so rest assured I’ll try to clean up my act a little and you wont be seeing anymore…flashlights.
Now then, on to today’s graphic display of immorality.
Violence against women is bad, so take that in mind before you kids go off shooting prostitutes through the torso. Violence against men, however, is still cool, especially when they wear dorky skull-masks and whine a lot.
The most warped perspective I’ve ever drawn can be seen in the staircase panel (seriously, even the perspective in my The Cupboard of Dr. Calibani was more accurate!).
lol he forgot the uzi and the coke. PS no coke, pepsi!
Does her weapons stash also include her weapon from last week???
Oh, right, no more “flashlights.”
Just curious… how many people made the connection between “The Cupboard of Dr. Calibani” and the classic film, “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”? For those who might have missed it, a slightly condensed version of the original silent is up for viewing on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrg73BUxJLI
It’s rather tame by today’s standards, but keep in mind this was released in 1919. It was groundbreaking for its day, and set the tone for many horror movies to follow.
@evandeboob Oh, goodie, another debate topic! Coke vs Pepsi. What’s your poison, kiddies?
@Dan No more flashlights! No more neon brights! NOBODY’s got a little light UNDER THE SUUUUUN!
@Hoomi I warned my readers about the fact that Caligari is in the public domain, so there’s a lot of pisspoor copies floating around out there. There’s a couple of good copies, with original scores (not the crappy goth bands) and nice color tints, so lovers of classic cinema are encouraged to pick up one of these.
I mostly prefer Caligari for the style over the story; I know a lot of old-time movies don’t grasp the attention like modern blockbusters, but there are several silent films that keep me interested all the way through (“Nosferatu”, “The Lost World” and “The Unholy Three”).
Awesome that you appreciate the classics, Hoomi!
how can she keep screaming “GO” even when Scapula is running in the street? Isn’t she supposed to be dead by then.
anyway i did enjoy reading this week’s page. this thing is beginning to obtain a plot.
btw, nice new background. it’s superspecialawesome!
There was a sort-of remake done of Caligari a few years ago, derived from one of the remaining prints of the original. They kept the backgrounds, and had modern actors playing the parts with sound. Their intention was to honor the original for its contributions to cinema, though whether other fans of the original will appreciate the results is a matter of personal taste.
One of my all-time favorite films is the Charles Laughton version of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Exceptional movie, and I think Victor Hugo would have approved. The Disney version, however, probably had Hugo spinning in his grave.
I can’t believe I’ve not mentioned it thus far, but your lava lamp effects are totally schweeet, D.H.
I will kinda’ miss the German / Swiss woman, though. 🙂
@montecristo She’s not quite dead yet! I think she may go for a little walk!
Nice that you approve of the new direction. Perhaps some day there might be an actual story in SCAPULA…and if we’re lucky it will make sense!
@Hoomi I heard of the remake; I think Doug Jones took the role of Cesare. I have yet to see it, although it’s not exactly tops on my to-do list.
The 1939 RKO version of Hunchback had its ups and downs; its main weakness is the know-it-all king, who comes across as extremely pretentious and annoying (the film was made during the early rumblings of WWII, and while America wasn’t quite ready to join the fracas they wanted to keep good relations with the French, hence the King in the film being super PC and tech-savvy.) Laughton’s performance was great, and made more enjoyable by the fact that he wasn’t on screen every second of the film (other versions of Hunchback tend to do that).
Some people crab about the fact that Quasimodo lives in the ending instead of dying, although I think his situation is so much more tragic with him alive instead of a martyr (the woman he has tried so hard to save has left with another man, without even saying “thank you” or even “goodbye”!). His only friends left are the stone gargoyles (who don’t pop alive in this version!), and he is left alone and forgotten. Heavy stuff.
@SpilledInky You’re free to borrow Olivia for your comic if you like, sir! Alive or dead.
Glad you liked the lava lamp!
Now that’s the perfect visual to explain “hauling @$$”.
Nice gunshot scene too. I think it would hurt that bad also.
Any chance Alf will be on that boat?!? o.O
And that center panel… WOW!
@George It’s funny, because I’ve never regarded SCAPULA as especially violent beyond simply beating up our lovable villain protagonist, but this storyline has gotten pretty goshdarned graphic. I’ve never played Grand Theft Auto but I seem to be channeling its spirit…hmm…perhaps I could channel another video game. Super Mario 3, anyone? Haul @$$!
@Jynksie The name “Melmac” will be explained shortly (it has nothing to do with our cat-eating alien friend, mind you!). And glad you like the center panel!
are you serious? the bitch is still alive? but the bullet came right through the centre of her chest and u r tellin me she survived?!?
Hey, you could try channeling the original “A Team,” where copious bullets fly, things explode, fists get thrown, vehicles get flung in spectacular wrecks and flips, but no one ever gets more than a few bruises.
haha wow.. i swear.. everytime i stop by, something CRAZY happens. CRAZY.
Hah! Awesome, I love the sprinting and the scenery in the last three panes.
@montecristo Relax, man. Take a few deep breaths. It’s all calm and peaceful here. Think of dolphins. Feel the breeze…and yes, she’s dead now.
@Hoomi I’ve never actually seen “The A-Team”. I know there’s a movie coming out (which makes me frightfully remember the late nineties’ craze of making movies based on old TV shows…eek).
@Joenis Right back atcha! For those of you who haven’t read “L.A.W.L.S”, go give it a shot. I don’t know how many actual whales I’ve seen there, but hopefully more soon.
@Dan Many thanks, Dan! And look: your comment didn’t get lost this time!
Thanks! Eventually there will be whales in my comic… just working to get everyone familiar with the characters first. :]
about time she died.
and one more thing; i’m pretty calm right now (man that coke sure is good stuff!)
