This is gonna be good, isn’t it? I feel that this will be good.
…or it will be bad. VERY, VERY BAD!
Whatever happened to the “whining idiot bungler’ Scapula? He hasn’t been around for a while.
Not that I miss him, mind you.
Ha! Well, there’s always Volume 1 of the book series, available now in the Store section.
When being hunted, remember that psychology is on the side of the hunter. Prey tend to panic, worry, make mistakes. This can be avoided by remaining calm and remembering that the hunting party suffers from several drawbacks: they have to find YOU, they have to move and you don’t, they have to know what they’re looking for, and they need to assume you’re still in the area based on evidence. They also have the problem of having to search large areas, and often they don’t have time on their side. That said, always assume your opponent is a skilled tracker and they have backup and weapons. The best way to escape a hunter who has reached an area is to make sure they have to methodically search for you then, once they’re slowed, take an unorthodox escape route OR put evidence around that you have taken an obvious escape route and remain in hiding. In this case for example the best method of escape would probably be to duck into dense foliage, leave some indication you had been there, then swim away.
All of this brings to mind numerous wildlife documentaries that state most carnivores fail 9 out of 10 chases to bring down prey (and the only thing worse for a hungry predator than missing dinner is hearing David Attenborough remind you in a voiceover that you go hungry again).
A lot of good tips there, and remember, folks: you can learn a lot from the 1932 film version of The Most Dangerous Game (a favorite, if you believe the lore, of the notorious Zodiac Killer). It also has lots of useful hints about evading a hunter, and is a damned good movie to boot!
I second the vote on The Most Dangerous Game being an excellent movie.
In truth, without abusing human psychology to make things so much easier, hunting is infinitely harder than being hunted.
Also, I often wonder how many wild predators dream of dining on documentary commentators. Just as often I wonder if Tony the Tiger dreams of frosted wildlife. Wait, nevermind, The Far Side answered the second one, and it’s ‘yes’.
