THE JEMINI KILLER pt.2
I sometimes forget that new readers are coming in all the time, and that a serial comic like SCAPULA can be a tough series to jump in on. For those of you fresh newbies who are just joining us now, a lot of this story references events that occurred in a 2011 story, SCIENCE FICTION DOUBLES FEATURE, so you might want to jump back and check it out.
Okay, on to the Long Beach Comic Con recap: twas a lot of fun, a lot of business, but sadly I forgot to bring a camera. Here are some convention sketches I did, instead:

For those of you artists who do conventions, I recommend that you try to keep on drawing whenever you have downtime (while still being attentive to potential customers, of course). Passerbys LOVE to watch artists at work and see what they can do, especially since it could lead to caricatures or commissions. It also helps if you are able to draw while also being able to engage people in conversation, so don’t just huddle up over your drawing unless if you want a customer to spend their precious time talking to the top of your head!
Finally, I have to give a shout-out to John Hazard again, who apparently liked the Frankenstein Superstar reference I made on the Halloween comic so much he went and drew some awesome art featuring Knuckle Sam’s monstrous hunger for the ladies! Check out his cool cartoon work over at Frankenstein Superstar!
Well , the guy beaten , looks absurdly injured (he looks like a zombie) , but I’m not completely sure if it was intended to be funny.
The humor might have comes across if the gangsters had mushed a pie in his face.
Alas, two heads and a hospital gown are hard to miss. Things look mighty bleak for our gal.
Hold on, now, maybe they’ll mistake her for some OTHER girl with two heads running about! It could happen, right?
Okay, she’s screwed.
Love the con pics. Great job!
Thanks, man!
Hit those cons yourself! Yeah, I know you’re shy, but why not wear a mask or something? Angus Oblong never does a con without his clown make-up.
Man, you create some knuckle-biting tension in these comics. I hope she can make tracks or get somewhere safer. Heck, hopefully she can run into Scap. His protection is better than nothing. Right? Right??
Anyway, the art is lovely. I think you’re one of the best colorists around. I try to study your methods but come up empty-handed and still envious. Maybe one day I can figure you out. 🙂
Hmm…I don’t know if Scap has quite forgiven her for the last time they met (getting stabbed has a way of severing a friendship…and arteries). Actually she’s running into Golden Gate Park, the last place she was ever seen with Scapula…COINCIDENCE?
Yup.
As for coloring, just do it the way you think is best. I don’t think my murky, desaturated color pallet would work for Addanac City (or a lot of other webcomics for that matter), so just go with what you think does your comic the best justice. You’ve got the skills, man!
Is it me, or does the concept of beating someone while demanding the money lose any meaning after abut the third punch? You know, demanding someone pay you back while knocking them senseless seems kinda stupid, in the long run.
Well, glad to see Sharkmouth’s boys are back and mobile again! Thought there wouldn’t be too much of them a while ago, but I guess they were smart enough to scram. Good goons! Here’s a biscuit!
And of course, no matter how smart you are, no gun means no chance against street thugs that really wanna hurt you. Run, Jemini, Run!
Also, hun, you make some of the flat out funniest sketches! Bonus awesome points for the evil dead pokemon!
It’s a tad reminiscent of the Monty Python “Piranha Brothers” sketch (they would threaten to beat up their victims IF they paid the protection fee…this goes through a few variations before they realize it’s beat them up UNLESS they paid the protection fee).
Glad you enjoy the tag-team match of violence and silly sketches (come to the west coast comic cons and get a drawing some day!), and we’re definitely not at the end of the violent silliness yet!
Yeah, I’d love to come except for the whole ‘never going back to america’ thing. Me and Uncle Sam have been bickering in court for almost a decade now and I’m not seeing any end in sight. (Last forecast was seven years from January….. at best). You can bet if you’re still doing the cons if/whenever I can freely travel back, I’ll be showing up!
…… just don’t hold your breath. Sorry hun.
Not just the “new” readers, at that. I might be a latecomer, but I did already read the archives – and I still felt the need to go back and reread that story, just to brush up, heh. Would help (and save your bandwidth, a bit) if we had offline collections to read. ::nudge:: ::nudge::
I know publishing can be a nightmare, and besides I’ve been trying to go digital so I could stop having to buy new bookcases to keep up – but any chance you might be looking at selling digital collections soon? No big feat to just download a PDF I an transfer to my Xoom or my Kindle and read it on the go, ya know?
And rereading that old arc reminded me what a cheesecake Mira Mira is. OK, so now I have *two* ideas brewing for commission requests. 😀
Soooo I might as well give everyone the lowdown on the book news (I was going to wait until next Sunday, but I can touch on it a little bit now): the print-on-demand publisher I had been planning to use for the books turned out to be doing a truly DREADFUL, unprofessional job on the books and I decided not to do business with them. I have since found a more reliable publisher who will make the books no problem.
The basic question for now is whether I should try to get these books out before the end of the year or wait until January (which would make them ‘new year’s business’). I’ll talk about it some more next Sunday, but if anyone out there has thoughts on the books please feel free to comment.
I would vote ‘whatever puts less pressure on you’ (mostly as far as taxes goes).
Great sketches, Aidan!… what kind of pen did you use?
I use a special marker called a Markette; it’s mainly used by caricature artists and is my favorite pen to use for most any drawing.
Unfortunately these only come from Canada, so they’re a tad pricey, and even more unfortunate is that they don’t make them anymore (the company stupidly changed the pen nib which screws with the marker’s flexibility and pressure sensitivity), so if you find any stock up while you can!
Jeez, Joker, if you haven’t figured it out by now I don’t know what to tell you…
I’ve seen the Killer Muppet Babies idea before, but adding Norman Bates as Nanny is a masterstroke. Think you can make the Philly Comic Con (or Wizard World Philly or whatever they’re going to call it) next year?
I’m sure the Joker knows; it’s just a matter of whether or not he cares.
I probably won’t be hitting any East Coast cons any time soon (sorry), but it is good that I do some market research on the more requested conventions. Who knows, a trip out there may be sooner than you think (if it’s worth an artist’s while to make the trek!).
Jemini has that double-headed deer in the headlights look! Great pacing and color, Aidan! Very fond of your atmospheric effects too.
