HOUSE OF SCAPULA pt.1
What else can I say about Comikaze, other than it was one of the rockinest best conventions ever? This was easily the best convention I’ve ever done, and also noteworthy in that it was the first time I’ve ever gone solo for a table (well, solo except for all of the awesome help from the super-cool Alexandra Hamilton). Thank you everyone who came on out and helped support your humble creepy artist, and I’m already looking forward to next year’s show!
Oooooooo … is that a Harley/Ivy combo you’re drawing in the second photo? Got fully inked versions? How much for prints? 😀
Would love to have stopped by and said hi, but just a weeeee bit outta my way. Some day, I hope.
There was such a humongous demand for anything Harley Quinn-related that I made a new print based on one of my sketches of her…and it sold out the first day. That sketch you see above was just something I did for fun, and a passerby asked to buy it right on the spot.
I would scratch my head and wonder why such a ditzy character is so damned popular, but I know better than to look a cash cow in the mouth!
Prints will be available for on-line sale once I get the store section of my portfolio website up and running, which sadly wont be for a while. E-mail me if you see any prints in the photo that you would be interested in buying and we can arrange something.
She’s the zany, approachable side of evil.
Well, looks like you had fun at Comikaze. I envy you. Here in Japan, they have conventions of course, some of the craziest stuff you’ve ever seen. But getting to them can be a royal pain with the complicated street system. I would’ve spread my wings and flown over to them, but I think the tables would accuse me of stealing the show…
Anyways…another parody eh? I confess I dont know too much about this one, but no doubt Scap’s overactive imagination is going to give us a few twists a cut above the movie itself.
Now I’m curious to see what those Japanese conventions are like. Then again, when you’re as big and scary-lookin’ as I am I get the feeling I’d get kicked out of the country pretty fast (they have enough giant monster problems there!).
Don’t worry if you don’t recognize the movie/s being parodied here. It’s all in good fun!
This…… looks….. AWESOME, Hun!
Thank you, Lady Jenn! THIS!….IS!….AWESOME!
I would say “Sparta”, but I never saw that movie, nor do I plan to.
“first time I’ve ever gone solo” yeah right….oh wait you said “first time I’ve ever gone solo for a table” hahah
Awesome….can’t wait till you become overly successful that you come to cons near me.
Oh and I know I am going to love this story arc.
I really, really want to start venturing out of California to start hitting conventions in other states; it all just depends on how much I make and if it’s worth making the trip. Comikaze was an astounding success, but that’s no guarantee that every show will be.
That said, I will keep my options open for 2013. I’ve already gotten a few good suggestions for comic conventions to attend from other readers, but if anyone out there knows a really good one feel free to let me know!
Last weekend of October there is the Austin Comic Con, the wife and I will be there. Why? Because she – out of the blue – asked me if I wanted to go — and if I wanted to go ahead and get a pair of VIP tickets to meet the ST:TNG crew (don’t ask how much they cost, heh).
Can you see why I married this woman and am scared to death of the day she finally realizes what a mistake it was to marry me? 😀
So I finally get to go to my first comic convention. As far as some of these cons go, Dada, you could always take a page from Jennie’s book over at Devil’s Panties – first couple years she went to DragonCon, she wasn’t a listed guest, didn’t have a table – just set up shop under the stairs, and people eventually got to know her.
Just go as a guest, look around, maybe see some artists you know who wouldn’t mind an impromptu teamup. You never know, eh?
Very good advice, sir! Research is a big part of finding the right cons, and what better way than to just attend a convention?
I would have to check my schedule and budget to see if traveling to an out-of-state convention is worth it, but I guess no one ever got anywhere by staying in their own backyard (if you’ll pardon the cliche I just made up).
I thought that black and white was used for flash backs, not for dreams.
Lazy colorist.
Might as well say that about EVERY BLACK-AND-WHITE MOVIE EVER MADE.
Buncha’ hacks!
What a cracking display. 😀 More pics!
Fancy tacking a crack at UK conventions or festivals? Heh. Though I’m not sure they’re quite as big as the US ones.
Also, loving where this arc started!
As I said above, I’m always open to traveling to a new con, but I have to really research it and see if it’s worth the cost. Going to the UK would be fun, but dealing with out-of-country sales can get a little complicated.
But I definitely will keep my options open. Again, if you want to see me at your local con, just shoot me a link to the convention’s website and I’ll check it out for sure. That goes for all of you!
To be honest I don’t know much about the UK comic cons other than Thought Bubble which is very nice, but has only 300 stalls across two venues compared to your US mega cons. I’m not sure you could treat it as a business trip at the sort of costs a UK ticket would be. Maybe a holiday where you earn your own spending cash, haha. 😛
I always did think the asylum guard in Dracula never quite got what was coming to him. Thanks for that!
I love those old black-and-white horror movies. Can’t wait to see what fiendishness lies in wait for us.
Very good! The guard is indeed Martin the asylum worker from the 1931 version of Dracula. He didn’t get killed in that movie, just creeped out when his assistant said, “Yes” for some reason…I’ve never been able to figure that out.
If you got that obscure reference you’re sure to like the rest of this story!
He can haz Chiezenburgers?
I think the only thing about this story arc that will be bad, is having to wait a week between installments! It already is fun, and promises to just get better!
You can haz Chiezenburgers, but don’t expect any weird-lookin’ cats to pop up in this story! Those things are too freakish for even a Halloween tale!
More monstrosities to come!
This upcoming storyline is looking like it’s going to be great. The moment I read the last panel, I remembered the movie Carnival of Souls, which is a great black and white horror film
Interesting notion, there! The last panel has a reference to Freaks (“Living Breathing Monstrosities”), but not Carnival of Souls. Oh well; that’s a good old spooky movie, too.
If Scapula ever met the ‘white-haired ghoul guy’ he’d probably just punch him.
It’s Horror Movie time! Oh boy, time to play up all the old Universal horror movie cliches!
Here’s hoping I don’t retread any jokes from Young Frankenstein! That Mel Brooks knows no mercy!
Yeah, Brooks will send Frau Blucher after you!
“BLUCHER!”
*whinny*
Joy! I love the Old-Tyme Horror Flick feel going down! Black an’ White makes me happy. This is gonna be fun… I sleep now.
Oh! And super congrats on your mega win at Comikazee… Let’s do the same at APE, yah?
Brig, you’re so giddy right now I’d swear you broke into the Trick-or-Treat candy early! Here’s hoping you enjoy this tale, without any tummy-aches!
Looking forward to APE, of course. This is probably the first con I’ll be doing so close to Halloween, so dressing up in certainly in order!
OOOO…. I look forward to a little spook going down at APE! Purple wig? I bring mine if you bring yours!
That is one stupendous-looking table you have there, Aidan. I wish I could have made it up to see you, but family planning took over. Well, not THAT kinda “family planning”, but other stuff, y’know. I’m glad to hear that you were successful while there. That is fantastic!
This recent Scap installment looks so pretty and moody in its black-and-whiteness. I like ti when color comics delve into black and white on occasion. You did good, my friend.
No worries, George! I’m still looking into Long Beach Comic Con, so that’s another chance for SoCal folks to stop by my booth. Otherwise there’s plenty of other conventions in ol’ LA where I’m sure to wind up.
Here’s hoping this comic doesn’t get TOO moody…I already covered that ground in BONE CHINA!
Yer Black and white movie effect is awesome! I really dug when you did that for the SV strip!
Further proof that I’m all out of fresh ideas; all I’m doing it rehashing what I did for that guest strip!
See for yourself here, folks: http://www.socialvermyn.com/?p=424
Comikaze looked like lots of fun! I’m gonna have to get some of the cons that they have out here on the east coast. Haven’t been going to them since the 90’s when I was doing heavy collecting… but before I try and sell stuff at them (which I keep threatening to do) I should go to a few and get the feel of it.
I’m looking forward to the new story… it must be fun to break the continuity and try some familiar faces in different roles!
Trust me, Jerry, you do NOT have to be a collector to have fun at comic conventions! For the past few years I’ve been doing cons I don’t recall buying a single piece of merchandise (well, other than helping a few other indie creators get some business), so you should definitely hit the convention circuit again. It’s a great way to get new people interested in what you do (and make a few bucks while you’re at it!).
Tremendous fun, Aidan, lovin’ this storyline. Great job on the old film effects! You and Comikaze, match made in… well, some place. Congrats on a great show!
Match made in Los Angeles! If you ever feel like doing a con in California this one’s as good as any (and don’t get me started on San Diego Comic-Con…).
Here’s hoping you enjoy this story! You look like you know your horror material.
Oh hey – while sending my last post, just noticed – you changed the page background!
Tinkered around with it yesterday! What do you think, folks? Like the new one or go back to the old (or the old, old, old, old when it was just gray?).
Nice. Gotta check that con out. You should totally bring Scapula to Intervention Con some year.
Hmmm….let’s see…that’s in…Maryland?
I’ll look into it. Thanks for the suggestion, Tony!
The longer I watch you do your craft, the more I’ve come to realize the depth of your talent! Take that to the bank and cash it sir! [grin]
