Hmm, black and white…not too much loss when you know the colour scheme anyway. Ugh, prison toilet, and considering the identities of the cell’s occupants, I’m willing to bet its even more foul than usual. That hack is practically asking for trouble if he’s going to open a cell door on those two with no weapon or backup…
Glad to hear that the first dose of B&W is going over well!
As for why the guard has no weapon or back-up…well, Babirus is pretty well behaved if you put him in his place. Just give him a doggie treat (or a dead rat) and he’ll sit, stay, roll over, or shake!
Thanks, George! One of the main reasons I decided to leave the dailies in B&W was to force me to work more on my drawing skills, particularly inking.
Yes, it also saves a ton of time spent coloring comics, but you’d be surprised how much an artist’s drawing skills improve when you don’t allow yourself to rely on color. It’s worth a shot.
Thank ya, Squid Row Mommy! I’ve been using Sketchbook Pro for penciling and inking (and before anyone nitpicks that, I am aware that no actual pencils or inks were involved); it’s my favorite program for drawing since the brushes have a very natural flow to them.
Nope, ’tis our other resident mutant freak, Babirus. If anyone’s forgotten about him it’s because we haven’t seen him since March 2011 (except for his minor role in Scapula’s dream in last October’s HOUSE OF SCAPULA).
Thankya, Roland! Here’s hoping everyone is cool with the B&W dailies (and, if not, you can always get your color fix on Sundays). Contrast makes the world go round.
I think Dick Tracy was probably one of the biggest influences for me to start doing SCAPULA dailies; the serial comic format is greatly improved with more installments, of course, and I think a lot of the new strips’ method of storytelling owes a debt to Tracy.
Whether it’s classic Chester Gould (or Rick Fletcher, another favorite artist) or the current team of Joe Staton and Mike Curtis, Dick Tracy is still one of the greatest comic strips around.
If you can get that reference (or references), then you’ve earned yourself all the sushi you can eat!
I met Haruo Nakajima once and gave him a drawing I did of Rodan. He was very nice, and I shook his hand before realizing it might have been more polite if I had bowed (I’m not very good at international etiquette).
Ditto on the new art. Scapula is one of those classics that looks good in color or B&W, and you can definitely see the deeper clarity you are putting into the B&W version. I likes!
Doesn’t mean I don’t like the color ones, I actually prefer them. This just means the sunday entries are gonna be mind-blowing when they come around. 😀
Glad to hear there’s something for everyone to appreciate! I think I might be cheating a little using gray tone in the B&W strips, but I’ve been trying to go light. One of my real goals with the dailies is to boost my drawing and inking skills without having color mask my efforts, so hopefully it pays off.
“Hokay, but lemme finish this first.”
Prisons really should offer doggie bags, right?
gitcher ? Word not in my dictionary.
Sloppy English for “get your”. You don’t need proper elocution to be a prison guard!
Especially if they’re in Sing Sing, because then most of the guards are likely from NY or NJ, and it’s just local dialect then.

Everything’s looking good so far, Aidan. Your art is butta even in black and white so I don’t feel like it’s missing anything at all.
I also wonder what that rat tastes like.

Wow… your lines are so clean! I am digging this… almost as much as Thorgore is enjoying that rat.

…wait… is that Thorgore?

I really like the B/W, don’t get me wrong, color is good too, but I like the feel of it all. Looking forward to this!

monochrome weekdays and color weekends is common in many webcomics. No need to fret over if folks’ll like it, hyena-dude.
Oh, thank goodness. I was afraid people would think I was being lazy!
“You were gone for two months and you couldn’t even color these new comics?! UNACCEPTABLE!”
Color is for sissies! Lookin’ good so far, Aidan. Looking forward to the new era!
Thanks, man! Grayscale will always kick the rainbow’s ass!
*sniff* It’s beautiful.
Actually in black and white your art style sure seems Dick Tracey-esque!
Okay, bet I know who’s getting these two nutters out…..

Also note to self….. Kenpachiro Nakajima. HMMMM. Seems SOME little artist is a bit of a Godzilla fan!
If you can get that reference (or references), then you’ve earned yourself all the sushi you can eat!

I’m jealous. But yeah, caught that. Where do I sent the bill for my sushi hun? Hehehehehehehehe.

But you’ll still get your color fix on Sundays!
