GANGWAY pt.1
Well, beloved reader, it looks like you’ve joined the fun at the best possible moment. This is the beginning of the biggest, longest, most surprising SCAPULA story so far, so prepare yourself for some excitement, suspense, and loser supervillains getting punched in the nads!
Returning to the spotlight is Jemini, who I haven’t used in a very long time (the last we saw of her was her daring escape from cannibals). Jemini was originally intended to be one of the central characters in SCAPULA, although sadly I never got around to using her too much up until now. I’m hoping you will all grow to love her as much as you’d love any short-tempered, zaftig gangster woman with dos cabezas.
I don’t remember when exactly I got into Dick Tracy (a possible guess is the Warren Beatty film, although I don’t recall watching it much during my youth). In any event, Chester Gould’s original comic masterpiece has provided me with plenty of crazy ideas to play off of, and continues to be a great source of inspiration. The gallery of deformed crooks above (including a cameo by my personal favorite Gould villain) could only have been inspired by Tracy.
Prepare yourselves, gang: this story’s going to be a BIG one!
Dang, you know your luck sucks if you get your leadership usurped before he first break of the first meeting. I hope she craps on their parade somehow.
Tony Da Toof sounds like the name of the next great kids cereal.
Did John get plastic surgery to fix his ailments?
i prefered Hypnausea but she is Ok as well. Glad to get rid of Little Miss whatever. Oh yeah this is going to be a nice story.
Interesting names BTW
@George Oh, yeah, business can be rough. She didn’t even get a bathroom break before she got tossed out of the building!
@Bearman Tony Da Toof…hmmm….probably a cereal with lots and lots and LOTS of sugar (so, any kids’ breakfast cereal). I’d probably have to get the cheap Safeway plastic bagged alternative, Anthony the Tooth.
@Monte Hypnausea will appear in the story following GANGWAY, but that isn’t going to be for a while. I’d recommend you check out his award-less appearances in A CRAPPY CRIME CAPER, THE SICKO SIX, or DEVIL MAY CARE storylines until then (go to the Archives section at the top of the page).
As for Little Miss Miserable…well, Fox is interested in giving her her own primetime TV series, so we’ll see where that goes.
Dude, I have no idea how I’ve missed your webcomic before now! Good stuff. Love the art and am anxious to read on with the storyline you have here! I’ll be keeping tabs….
@Nate Thanks so much, man! Incidentally, I’ve really enjoyed all of your blog posts about making comics and fretting over reader numbers (because I do that, too!). Very helpful advice.
I’m training like mad to get into MAD, so maybe someday they’ll run our comics side-by-side, next to the Sergio doodles. Hey, it could happen!
Man…I LOVE your characters. I like the cut of Tony da Toof’s jib. Don’t know what that means exactly, but I like it.
I look forward to seeing where this story goes!
MAD is something to aspire too… it would be an honor to be in the same title that once featured Harvey Kurtzman, Bill Elder and Wally Wood… among others..
@Charles Muchas gracias (or some such talk…my Spanish stinks)! Tony’s ‘jib’ isn’t the only thing about him that no one understands; wait until we hear him try to speak.
@Jerry Good to see someone else who loves the original Usual Gang of Idiots. Kurtzman, Davis, Wood, Elder and Severin were an extremely talented bunch. I’m still waiting for them to release the rest of the original comics in nice hardcover form (I have the first two volumes).
“DIG! DIG! DIG!”
*whew* to think I almost stopped by Benassi’s the other night – I think I’d better just stick to delivery from now on! 🙂
Oh yeah! Bring on the gang war!
@SpilledInky Well, you never know. Benassi’s is named after Benny Benassi, techno master and lord of the perverted music video. Check out his youTube videos for “Who’s Your Daddy?” and “Satisfaction” for further proof.
…I do hear that restaurant makes a great fish taco…
@David Damn right! This is gonna make “The Godfather” look like “The Godfather part III”!
Really like art. The cat in the last panel, MRAAAWWWRRR!!! hahahaha , it made my day!
@don Nice to meetcha! Glad you like the artwork.
Yes, frightening cats can be loads of fun, and you can do it without a license (unlike confusing cats, in which case you need to contact Confuse-a-Cat, Ltd.).
I always thought seemingly was a word… now you’ve got me searching for a dictionary. Poor one-eyed three-eared ugly freakshow John, he’s really the odd man out in this outfit.
@David I’m probably not the right person to consult on proper grammar (my own grasp on English is terrible), but ‘seemingly’ always feels kind of wrong when I write it down. It’s like using “ironical”; technically it’s not a ‘wrong’ word (like “conversate”), but it just bugs me.
John compensates for his lack of outside freakishness by being the biggest freak ever on the inside. I have no idea what that means, but it must be EVIL!
My wife turns into a 2 headed Jemini every 28 days or so! *smirk*
@jynksie Saynomore, saynomore, knowwhatimean, nudge nudge!
Awesome setup! I dig that Jemini’s middle ears are sharing one earring, by the way 😉
@Chris Good eyes, man! I don’t think anyone else noticed that (heck, even I probably forgot about it). I hope I didn’t subconsciously steal that from “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.
Say….Zaphod and Jemini would actually make a cute couple (or quadruple)!
