GANGWAY pt.9
The earliest drawings I ever did of Scapula portrayed him as very thin and spindly, which sort of fit his ‘skeleton costume’ motif. When the series’ humor became somewhat self-deprecating I thought it became necessary to show how truly out of shape Scapula was, resulting in his less-than-stellar physical condition above. There’s nothing really funny about portraying the characters with six-packs and bustling pecs.
On the same topic, Jemini is a rather heavy girl, but that’s because I really enjoy zaftig ladies. Whenever other guys ask me why I’m a “chubby-chaser” I give them this reply (read it out loud in a stereotypical Texan man’s voice): “When a man goes to a steak house he don’t order no plate full a’bones to gnaw on! He gets hisself a big, juicy piece a MEAT ta sink his teeth into, aint I right! YeeeHAW!”.
Was that funny, disturbing or sad? If all of the above, it sums up SCAPULA (and myself) rather nicely.
I was a scrawny bean-pole as a kid (at 17, I was 6’2″ and 108 pounds soaking wet). Still, I’ve never understood what was supposed to be so incredibly attractive about being skinny. I’ve always found Rubenesque women more attractive, and I’ve been happily married to the same one for 30 years now. I couldn’t love her more or find her sexier if she were skinny. Funny, disturbing, or sad, it sums me up rather well, too, and I’m not going to argue with success.
Ha! Someone who needs to improve their cardio as much as I do shouldn’t make fun of Scapula – so I won’t!
Love the guy checking his fluid level in the last panel, too! 🙂
@Hoomi Very happy to hear that. There are few things more comforting or pleasurable than a good hug, and I’m mighty grateful to have someone warm and soft to hug whenever I am feeling down.
On that note, I’m going to sneakily slip some fudge into her tea to make sure her tummy-tum remains intact!
@SpilledInky You and me both, my friend. I’m not a smoker, but my coffee intake level is enough that, were I struck hard enough by an outside force, I would explode like Chernobyl and take out the entire neighborhood!
The bum in the last panel is based on any number of homeless grumps back in San Francisco (I’ll tell some stories another time).
The krik and pop sounds come out of my body without carrying a double sized woman.
This comic had treats all the way throughout. I love the way you color, Aidan. I wish I was anywhere near your caliber. And you know I come here for the sultry thick chicks too. You draw my favorite kinda gals, so I can appreciate a guy who knows what a REAL woman looks like. 🙂
@Bearman Man, are all of us in such terrible shape? Geez…maybe we should get the Webcartoonists Union to set up a gym or something (maybe a jacuzzi for the aching joints, eh?).
@George The coloring isn’t so hard, really; it’s all about mileage, so just keep working on your craft and you’ll surpass me in no time!
And I’m very glad you and the others are enjoying the Rubenesque ladies. I’ll have to make a pin-up of Jemini, Knuckle Sam and Dr. Jeraukov wrestling or something!
i like all the little details you add in corners, like the dubious bum in this page, and the toes. you’ve got a busy brain.
…and i always think a girl is hotter if it looks like she might take me in a fight. so basically all of your ladies.
I’m betting I’m not the only one here that thought Elinore in Ralph Bakshi’s “Wizards” was one mighty sexy fairy princess… (well, as sexy as we can think a cartoon character can be)
I’m in good shape!!!
No, not really. I’m a terrible liar.
@Saturday It’s observation, really. That same grubby hobo probably exists, somewhere in San Francisco, probably waiting to take the seat next to you on the 14 Mission.
…and you rassling tough ladies is a thought that shall make my dreams that much sweeter.
@Hoomi Oh, goodness…we got ourselves a BAKSHI FAN here! Yes, Elinore was mighty hot (and Ralph said it was a ‘family friendly’ movie…take a good long look at her and try to imagine what people in the audience were thinking). Credit should also be given to Mike Ploog, storyboard/comic artist extraordinaire and one of my idols, who I’m pretty sure might have designed that character.
I have a lot of sincere respect and admiration for Ralph Bakshi, although whenever people mention his name I have to start giggling because the Ren & Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon episode “Fire Dogs 2” immediately comes to mind.
@Chris W What are great entertainers other than talented liars? Hey, man, we’re CARTOONISTS! Wear your awful shape with pride!
Aiden, I’ve been catching up and I love the new site background! By the way, as they say, “It’s not the motion of the ocean… it’s the size of the waves…” unless you’re prone to sea sickness, in which case it IS the motion of the ocean.
@David As long as there’s no crabs on that ocean floor you should be all right.
Glad you enjoy the new background!
Would it be foolish to admit that I’m old enough to have seen the ill-fated Bakshi “Lord of the Rings” movie in the theaters? Old enough, even, that I drove myself to the theater in my own car.
I used to have a VHS copy of “Wizards,” but heaven only knows if it’s still around. I should look for a DVD copy of it.
