SINISTER MONSTER DOOM LEGION pt.4
I used to work as a caricature artist at Knott’s Berry Farm. The reference here doesn’t make a lot of sense, not only because these guys are super-criminals but because this story takes place in San Francisco and Knott’s is a good five hundred-something miles away. Oh well; I guess they can afford the plane fare.
Zodi Jr. was mainly created out of my frustration with the movie “Zodiac”, or as it should have been titled, “Jake Gyllenhaal Plays a Smug, Obnoxious Knowitall Who Throws His Superior Theories at Ignorant Police and Editors…with a Guest Appearance by the Zodiac” (and if that weren’t bad enough, he’s also playing a cartoonist, and we all know how horrible cartoonists can be!).
Tune in next week for the special 100th comic post! It’ll freak the hell out of ya!
This was some of the best dialogue you have ever written, Aidan. Pure entertainment. I can’t decide whose lines I like the best. I see a future toy line coming. 🙂
Also, I love the Knott’s Berry Farm reference. Living in Riverside, Ca, it’s only a hop-skip away, but I haven’t been yet. I’m excited to go see what all the hoopla is about. Maybe I’ll run into a few of those guys. 🙂
Zodi Jr is quickly becoming my favorite. Also I agree with George, I can see a future toy line too!
Kicking it up a notch or 13 I see! o.O …. I shall be watching with antci……….pation as to who’s hand is up that muppets backside! *smirk*
@George The First Thank you kindly, sir. I would die a happy geek to see SCAPULA turned into a toy line. Right now all there is is a customized Scap action figure I made myself (I’ll post a photo soon, or just go to the Facebook page and look inside the photo section).
@George the Second It was a fun job, and Knott’s is a more modest theme park than its closest neighboring amusement areas. I still miss Camp Snoopy and seeing all the Charlie Brown characters…especially when they’re six feet tall and sneaking up on you when you’re drawing!
@Roland Zodi’s in for a lot of trouble, but isn’t that the life of a mass murderer? “Live by the sword, get a lot of scratches” or some such bullpoo.
@Jynskie the First Glad you’re enjoying the show!
Do I just come across as a raving Rocky Horror fan? Yeesh!
…now, a raving Muppet fan I am.
Do they make Jelly at Knotts Berry farm??
@Bearman Yes, and I’ve heard it’s good, but for some reason I never got around to buying any while I was there. Oh well. Live and learn.
I miss the old Knott’s Berry Farm, when it was still owned and run by the Knott family. It’s just not the same now that whatever mega-corporation is running it.
It might as well be the evil sockpuppet gang running it now.
@Hoomi The sad truth of the matter is that mega-corporations run EVERYTHING, and the more we try to fight that, the more we drive ourselves nuts. I sometimes grumbled over the whole issue of the Peanuts characters being licensed for Knott’s and twenty million pieces of merchandise; the truth is, yes, a mega-corporation runs that, but the artist/creator behind (Charles Schulz and his estate) got their fare share and the fans seem to love having Charlie Brown and Snoopy on knick-knacks and amusement park mascots. So I say, just let it be (now, if they were going to SCREW the creator out of fair dues, then it’s time to fight!).
Darkevilhelldeath-Man being chairman of the board is an approach I should have considered.
It wasn’t the Peanuts characters. As I recall, “Camp Snoopy” long pre-dated the selling of the company to the mega-corp. Talking to people who worked there under the Knott family, versus those who have worked there more recently, when it was still actually Knott’s, it was much more of a family feel among the staff. Under the big corporation, employees are treated more as a necessary evil that has to be tolerated, but never trusted.
@Hoomi Interesting thoughts. I may have to sidestep the conversation, since caricature work does keep me afloat and while I no longer work at Knott’s I wish to keep good relations all around (there’s enough people who are out to get me…grrr…). Please don’t think I’m ignoring or censoring your opinions.
On that note, you know what’s really evil, folks? WAITING FOR THE BUS! Don’t get me started! (…and off we go on a comic rant).
One of my son’s friends worked at Knotts in recent years, and he was the one that told us about how the big corporation treated people. At any rate, I definitely understand the idea of not wanting to burn any bridges. A paycheck is a paycheck, whether it comes from Mom and Pop company, or Megacorporation.
Waiting for the bus can be so much better if you offer to share your umbrella with a nice young lady…
I like Zodi jr’s look at life.
@Hoomi Oh boy…yesterday I waited at a busstop for two-and-a-half hours in 107′ degree heat. An umbrella and nice young lady would have been nice, but a glass of water would have been nicer (actually, the nicest thing would have been if the DAMNED BUS HAD SHOWN UP ON TIME!).
@evandenoob Zodi Jr has life distilled to the simplest things: Snoopy cars and killing people. Isn’t that all we really need?
It just occurred to me that I may have been showing my age with the bus stop reference. For those unfamiliar – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxMUiZzWy78
Very a-muses-ing, D.H.! 🙂
@Hoomi Ah…very nice. Not quite like working at the car wash, but it will do.
@SpilledInky Thankya veddy much, sir! Hope to see you back in action soon!
This is very cool. Love the story and the art of course is superb. I’d LOVE a Scapula plushy –make mine about 18 inches tall willya? ;`D
@Jande Scapula plushies…they’d be great for doggies, I’ll say that!
Are you sure you want it 18 inches? Right now I’m thinking about the mix-up in “This is Spinal Tap” (regarding the size of the Stonehenge prop).
