Nazz the Nazi was originally meant to be only a minor character, just a punk kid who was sort of a cross between Fairuza Balk and Lori Petty (with a good dose of Hopey Glass from Love and Rockets thrown in). A lot of times in storytelling characters who were intended to be bit players end up developing into much larger roles, often to the surprise of both the writer and the readers. I didn’t have too much in mind for Nazz when this story began, but then again a LOT has changed between the original draft I wrote and the final version (the former will probably be included as an extra if/when Scapula: Memento Mori is collected in book form).
The holiday season is upon us, so be sure to check out the Scapula Store to pick out the perfect gift for that special someone who will never speak to you again after s/he gets comics instead of hard alcohol (…brutal but true). All books are signed and sketched in by yours truly, so get your shopping done now and save that alcohol for yourself, because you’ve earned it!
This week on Scapula, Gangster Psychologist “Why I killed your girlfriend, doc”.
I actually like this page a lot. It has this late night / early morning somber atmosphere to it, when things seem a little clearer and focussing is easier.
Very fitting for the story arc, cudos.
That all sounds much, much better than Dr. Phil (I’d rather listen to a gangster psychologist than a fraud psychologist)!
I’m also glad you liked the atmosphere; a big part of the series’ setting is San Francisco and its gray weather, which I think adds a lot. Things would be a lot different if I set the comic here in Hollywood (the characters would all be obscured by smog and cocaine clouds).
My sympathy to Nazz. Been there but more depressed and less angry.
‘Nazz’ refers to Jesus? Oookay. Mom tried to teach me all this stuff but I don’t think it all sunk in. Anyone care to fill me in on the importance or am I going to have to down some tylenol and slog through the bible?
“Nazz” as in “Jesus of Nazareth”.
Oooooh, right. Duh. Thanks, Josh.
The band was also called The Earwigs and The Spiders before they hit on The Nazz (and yes, Josh is correct). Nazz (the character) actually had a few different names in the developments stages of SCAPULAJUGEND before I decided on her current name.
Big stunning cartoonist’s secret: “Nazz” was chosen because it’s one letter away from ‘nazi’. See? Clever, ain’t it?
Christ, the resemblance goes deeper than the face paint.
Exactly what I thought. And apperently Scap too, judging by the look on his face in the second to last panel. That is a nice one, by the way, Aidan.
As is the whole page. Fine sombre story telling that.
I am going to declare this here and now before some reader postulates the theory: no, Scapula is NOT Nazz’ father. Plot twists like that can go jump off a cliff.
But that would mean…
(GASP!)
Scapula is Nazz’s MOTHER!
Hm, Scap’s silence makes me think this could go either way.
Interesting fact: most silent people are in fact bisexual.
Okay, I have no data to back that up.
……..
I’d say Scap is more pan-hatual. He doesn’t discriminate against gender when hateful. 😉
He has enough hate for EVERYBODY!
It’s hard to judge what his expression means in the second to last panel, but I am looking forward to see where this goes
We shall see tomorrow!
Thank you for that bit! Nazz is quite typical in what she says but the dynamic between her and Scapula creates heartbreaking tension.
Glad you enjoyed; if this comic ever runs out of heartbreaking tension then alls I got is screaming lunacy and the occasional potty joke. Hee hee….potty.
Gotta admit, Nazz is kinda growing on me.
